What We Do

UC Davis is Leading the 21st Century through the relentless pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration. The UC Davis Policy Institute for Energy, Environment, and the Economy (Policy Institute) was founded in 2011 to support this mission by facilitating productive engagement between policymakers and University researchers on pressing energy and environmental issues.

Because building a sustainable energy and environmental future must be an “all hands on deck” effort, the Policy Institute strives to engage a diverse set of stakeholders at the local, state, national, and international levels. Given UC Davis’ unique position as the premier research university in the Sacramento region, the Policy Institute places particular emphasis on informing California state legislation, policies, and programs. Policy Institute activities focus on six topic areas in which the University has particular expertise and where there is a pressing need for research-informed policy. These are:

• Energy systems
• Sustainable transportation
• Water and ecosystems
• Environmental justice
• Future cities
• Climate neutrality

For each of these areas, the Policy Institute identifies challenges that governments and other policymaking bodies face in balancing sustainability, equity, and economic growth, and proposes research-based, action-oriented solutions. By working together, we can translate ideas into a better reality for all.
